The Art of Callback Functions in Java: A Les Misérables Full Movie Free Download Analogy

In Victor Hugo's classic novel Les Misérables, Jean Valjean and Javert engage in a cat-and-mouse game, with each trying to outwit the other. Similarly, in Java programming, callback functions can be seen as a way for two entities to interact with each other, where one entity (the 'callback') performs an action on behalf of another entity (the 'caller'). In this article, we'll explore the concept of callback functions in Java and how they work.

Inspired by Heinz Kabutz's recent newsletter and Scala's Futures, which I investigated in my recent book, I set out to write a Java 8 example that demonstrates how to submit work to an asynchronous task using callbacks. To do this, we'll create an interface X with a single method A(), which will be overridden by the instance of X passed to the callback function.

The callback function in Java works as follows: when calling method1(), we pass an instance of X and override the A() method inside method1(). This allows us to define a custom behavior for the callback. We can create a method method1() with A as a method parameter, which will be called by the callback function.

Developers familiar with event-driven programming models like MS-Windows and the X Window System are accustomed to using interfaces to implement equivalent callback functions in Java. Callbacks in Java can be categorized into three types:

* Synchronous callback: This type of callback is blocking and one-way, meaning that the caller waits for the callback function to complete before proceeding.

* Asynchronous call: In this type of callback, notification occurs through asynchronous messages, allowing the caller to continue executing without waiting for the callback function to complete.

* Two-way (or bi-directional) callback: This type of callback is similar to the two gears of a bicycle, where both entities interact with each other in a continuous loop.

In conclusion, callback functions are an essential concept in Java programming that allows developers to decouple the calling and called code. By understanding how callbacks work, developers can write more efficient and scalable code that takes advantage of asynchronous processing.
